Various concept art for a new class of Star Destroyers was created in the development of ''The Force Awakens'', with a finalized designed — drawn by VFX art director James Clyne — approved in July 2014.  Clyne had experimented with using negative spaces in creating the Star Destroyer, similar to his earlier work on ''[[Star Trek Into Darkness]]''.  He said he had fun fun working on it as director [[J. J. Abrams]] was heavily involved in the process and offered suggestions.<ref>{{cite book|last=Szostak|first=Phil|title=The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens|publisher=Harry N.
