===Development of the diode===
Armed with the knowledge of how these new diodes worked, a vigorous effort began to learn how to build them on demand. Teams at [[Purdue University]], [[Bell Labs]], [[Massachusetts Institute of Technology|MIT]], and the [[University of Chicago]] all joined forces to build better crystals. Within a year germanium production had been perfected to the point where military-grade diodes were being used in most radar sets.
