Colonel Theodore Roosevelt and the Rough Riders were popularly portrayed in [[Wild West shows]] such as ''Buffalo Bill's Wild West and Congress of Rough Riders of the World'' and in [[minstrel show]]s such as [[William H. His extravaganzas glamorized it into an appealing show for eastern American audiences and helped permanently preserve the legends. The 'cult' of the cowboy was born, for Roosevelt, the vigorous, unbridled life of the Western cowboy was the perfect antidote to the softness of comfortable city living.
