An ongoing political controversy developed around charges that Operation Peter Pan was not an effort of volunteers and charitable organization, but had been secretly funded by the U.S. government as a covert operation of the [[Central Intelligence Agency]]. Author Maria de los Angeles Torres filed a [[Freedom of Information Act (United States)|Freedom of Information Act]] suit to obtain government files on the program.
