Several areas, such as Alsace-Lorraine, were placed under the authority of an adjacent ''[[Gau (country subdivision)|Gau]]'' (regional district). The ''[[Reichskommissariat]]e'' (Reich Commissariats), quasi-colonial regimes, were established in some occupied countries.
