A flash flood occurred in July 2012, when a downpour lasting just 90 minutes devastated the village. This was a repeat of another flash flood of June, in the same year, where more than 50&nbsp;mm of rain fell causing the River Calder to burst its banks. More than 5,000 properties were severely damaged in the [[Upper Calder Valley]]; many businesses lost insurance and consequently many never recovered.
