Between 1968 and 1972, the [[Staatliches Filmarchiv der DDR]], with the help of film archives from around the world, put together a version of ''Metropolis'' which restored some scenes and footage, but the effort was hobbled by a lack of a guide, such as an original script, to determine what, exactly, was in the original version.<ref name=bennett />
