===Controls on plastic waste and recycling of domestic waste===
From 1 August 2019, specific single-use plastic items are subject to a ban on importation into Tuvalu, an importation levy was also imposed on specific items, such as refrigerators and vehicles, to raise money to pay for their recycling or shipment out of the country when they cease to be usable.<ref name="LOC19">{{cite web| last = Buchanan | first = Kelly |title= Tuvalu: Ban on Single-Use Plastics Commences |publisher= Library of Congress |page=|date = 19 August 2019|url= https://www.loc.gov/item/global-legal-monitor/2019-08-19/tuvalu-ban-on-single-use-plastics-commences/| accessdate=8 November 2023}}</ref> The new rules are contained in two regulations: the Waste Management (Prohibition on the Importation of Single-Use Plastic) Regulation 2019 and the Waste Management (Levy Deposit) Regulation 2019, which regulations are made under the Waste Operations and Services Act 2009.<ref name="LOC19"/>
