He starred in numerous musical films such as ''[[The Gay Divorcee]]'' (1934), ''[[Top Hat]]'' (1935), ''[[Follow the Fleet]]'' (1936), ''[[Swing Time (film)|Swing Time]]'' (1936), ''[[Shall We Dance (1937 film)|Shall We Dance]]'' (1937), ''[[Holiday Inn (film)|Holiday Inn]]'' (1952), ''[[Easter Parade (film)|Easter Parade]]'' (1948), ''[[The Barkleys of Broadway]]'' (1949), ''[[Royal Wedding]]'' (1951), ''[[The Band Wagon]]'' (1953), ''[[Funny Face]]'' (1957), ''[[Silk Stockings (1957 film)|Silk Stockings]]'' (1957), and ''[[Finian's Rainbow (1968 film)|Finian's Rainbow]]'' (1968). He later starred in the drama ''[[The Towering Inferno]]'' (1974).
