In 2001, it came to light that Sullivan had posted anonymous online advertisements for [[bareback sex|unprotected anal sex]], preferably with "other HIV-positive men". Sullivan identifies himself as a faithful Catholic while disagreeing with some aspects of the Catholic Church's doctrine.
