In general, adenosine has an inhibitory effect in the [[central nervous system]] (CNS).
[[Caffeine]]'s stimulatory effects are credited primarily (although not entirely) to its capacity to block adenosine receptors, thereby reducing the inhibitory tonus of adenosine in the CNS.
