In 2005, 16 per cent of cargo traffic in Bangladesh used inland waterways, a decrease from 37 per cent in 1975.<ref name=":16" /> The [[Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority]] (BIWTA) is responsible for the development, maintenance, and regulation of inland water transport and navigable waterways in Bangladesh.<ref name=":4"/>
