Swindon is an important [[railway town]]. [[Swindon railway station]] opened in 1842 as ''Swindon Junction'' and, until 1895, every train stopped for at least ten minutes to change locomotives. As a result, the station hosted the first recorded railway refreshment rooms.<ref>LTC Rolt, Isambard Kingdom Brumel, Penguin 1957.</ref>

The station is served by frequent inter-city trains to [[London Paddington station|London Paddington]] eastbound, and westbound to {{rws|Bristol Temple Meads}}, {{rws|Cheltenham Spa}} and {{rws|Cardiff Central}}, along the [[Great Western Main Line]] and [[Golden Valley line]]. There is also a local service to {{stnlnk|Westbury}}, via the [[Wessex Main Line]].
