In 1988 the Alignment, led by Peres, suffered another [[1988 Israeli legislative election|narrow defeat]]. In the grand coalition unity government of 1988–90 (the [[twenty-third government of Israel]]), Peres served as [[Finance Minister of Israel|minister of finance]] and also continued to be the designated acting prime minister of Israel.
