After the [[Turkish invasion of Cyprus]] and subsequent [[Cyprus dispute#The divided island 1974–1997|division of the island]], there was an agreement between the [[Greek Cypriot|Greek]] representative on one side and the [[Turkish Cypriot]] representative on the other side under the auspices of the [[United Nations]] on August 2, 1975. Around 150,000 people (amounting to more than one-quarter of the total population of Cyprus, and to one-third of its [[Greek Cypriots|Greek Cypriot population]]) were displaced from the northern part of the island, where Greek Cypriots had constituted 80% of the population.
