In March 2015 the British government established [[List of largest protected areas|one of the largest]] [[marine protected area]]s in the world around the Pitcairn Islands. The reserve covers the islands' entire [[exclusive economic zone]]—{{convert|834334|km2}}. The intention is to protect some of the world's most pristine ocean habitat from [[illegal fishing]] activities.
