===Local government===
The Northern Territory is divided into [[Local government areas of the Northern Territory|seventeen local government areas]]: two cities, three municipalities, nine regions, and three shires.  Shire, city and town councils are responsible for functions delegated by the Northern Territory parliament, such as road infrastructure and waste management.
