Among its research accomplishments was the first working [[laser]]. Despite the aerospace industry's downsizing in the 1990s, HRL is the largest employer in Malibu. [[Jakks Pacific]] is based in Malibu. Established in 1937 in south-central Los Angeles, Pepperdine University moved to its Malibu campus in 1972.
