There is a large presence of [[microorganism]]s in the lungs known as the [[lung microbiota]] that interacts with the airway epithelial cells; an interaction of probable importance in maintaining homeostasis. The [[Microbiota#Humans|microbiota]] is complex and dynamic in healthy people, and altered in diseases such as [[asthma]] and [[COPD]].
