Ironwood is the only known place in the Upper Peninsula to ever host a professional sports team, the [[Northwest Football League]]'s Gogebic Panthers in 1935<ref>{{Cite web |title=1935 Gogebic Panthers (NWFL) |url=https://www.profootballarchives.com/1935nwflgog.html |access-date=2023-05-05 |website= Pro Football Archives}}</ref> and 1936.
