Smooth newts, including the larvae, are unselective carnivores, feeding mainly on diverse [[invertebrate]]s such as earthworms, snails, slugs, bivalves, spiders, ticks, mites, springtails or insects and insect larvae, or smaller [[plankton]].<ref>{{cite web | url=https://amphibiaweb.org/species/4303 | title=AmphibiaWeb – Lissotriton vulgaris }}</ref> [[Cannibalism]] also occurs, mainly by preying on eggs of its own species. Various predators eat smooth newts, including waterbirds, snakes and frogs, but also larger newts such as the northern crested newt.{{r|Sparreboom2014|p=238}}
