==Further influence== After [[Bell Labs]] changed its [[Unix|UNIX]] licence in 1979 to make dissemination of the source code illegal, the 1976 [[Lions' Commentary on UNIX 6th Edition, with Source Code|Lions book]] which contained the source code had to be withdrawn, but illegal copies of it circulated for years.{{Citation needed|reason=Source?|date=October 2021}} The act of copying the Lions book was often referred to as samizdat. In hacker and computer jargon, the term samizdat was used for the dissemination of needed and hard to obtain documents or information.<ref>{{harvnb|Raymond|1996}}; {{harvnb|Jargon File|2004}}: "Note that samizdat is properly used only with respect to documents which contain needed information (see also hacker ethic) but which are for some reason otherwise unavailable, but not in the context of documents which are available through normal channels, for which unauthorized duplication would be unethical copyright violation."</ref>
