During the [[American Revolution]], General [[George Clinton (vice president)|George Clinton]] crossed the Rondout Creek at Rosendale Village in October 1777,{{sfn|Gilchrist|1976|p=20}} arriving "one or two days too late to resist the British attack"{{sfn|Sylvester|1880|p=239}} on Kingston by the forces of General [[John Vaughan (British Army officer, died 1795)|John Vaughan]].
