In [[Laos]], which is a [[one-party state]] similar to that of China, the president is elected by the [[National Assembly of Laos|Laotian National Assembly]], and is not considered to be head of state. Since 1998, however, presidential officeholders in Laos often occupy their position as [[General Secretary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party]] concurrently, and thus exercise political power via that role. The [[President of Laos]] is the [[commander-in-chief]] of the [[Lao People's Armed Forces]]. They also possess the authority (with the consent of the national assembly) to appoint the [[Prime Minister|prime minister]] and [[List of vice presidents of the United States|vice president]], as well as other roles. The current President of Laos, elected in March 2021, is [[Thongloun Sisoulith]].<ref name=LaosThailandembassypage/>
