A total of 12,936 944 S models were produced from 1987 to 1988, with 8,815 being exported to the United States. In 1985 a Prototype 944 S Cabriolet 'Studie' built by Braun was powered by the 2.5&nbsp;L 16 valve which developed 185&nbsp;hp, forerunner of the later production 944 S and S2 Cabriolet models.{{citation needed|date=October 2016}}
