Epidemiological studies suggest an association between ocular cortical cataracts and UV-B exposure, using crude approximations of exposure and various cataract assessment techniques. A detailed assessment of ocular exposure to UV-B was carried out in a study on Chesapeake Bay Watermen, where increases in average annual ocular exposure were associated with increasing risk of cortical opacity.<ref>{{cite journal |title=Sunlight exposure and risk of lens opacities in a population-based study: the Salisbury Eye Evaluation project |journal=JAMA |volume=280 |issue=8 |pages=714–8 |year=1998 |pmid=9728643|doi=10.1001/jama.280.8.714 |last1=West |first1=S. D. |doi-access=free }}</ref> In this highly exposed group of predominantly white males, the evidence linking cortical opacities to sunlight exposure was the strongest to date.
