In February 2005, Hingis came out of retirement and made an unsuccessful return to competition. This took place at an event in [[2005 Volvo Women's Open – Singles|Pattaya]], Thailand, where she lost to Germany's [[Marlene Weingärtner]] in the first round. After the loss, she claimed that she had no further plans to continue further and make a full-fledged comeback.

Hingis, however, resurfaced in July, playing singles, doubles, and mixed doubles in [[World Team Tennis]] and notching up singles victories over two top 100 players and shutting out [[Martina Navratilova]] in singles on 7 July. With these promising results behind her, Hingis announced on 29 November her return to the next season's [[WTA Tour]].
