==== Other diplomatic activities ==== In 1998, Annan was deeply involved in supporting the transition from military to civilian rule in [[Military dictatorship in Nigeria|Nigeria]]. The following year, he supported the efforts of [[East Timor (province)|East Timor]] to secure independence from Indonesia.
