Hird married Tania Poynton on 11 October 1997. Hird's paternal grandfather, the late [[Allan Hird, Sr.]], was a notable player for and president of the Essendon Football Club, and his father, [[Allan Hird, Jr.]], had a brief playing career with Essendon.
