|Orphan grandson of [[Gordian I]], born in Rome on 20 January 222. Made ''[[Caesar (title)|caesar]]'' by the Senate in May 238, succeeded as ''augustus'' at age 13, the youngest sole emperor. Reigned under the regency of the Senate and, from 241, of the [[praetorian prefect]] [[Timesitheus]], whose daughter [[Tranquillina]] he married.
