===International recognition=== In the 1970s, the idea for a global carillon organization took shape, and the {{ill|World Carillon Federation|nl|Beiaard Wereld Federatie}} was later formed as the central organization of carillon players and enthusiasts. It is a federation of the preexisting national or regional carillon associations that had been founded throughout the 20th century.{{sfn|Rombouts|2014|p=312}} In 1999, [[UNESCO]] designated [[Belfries of Belgium and France|32 bell towers in Belgium]] as a [[World Heritage Site]], in recognition of their architectural diversity and significance.
