Between 1831 and 1924, the [[Morris Canal]] connected the [[coal]] industry of the [[Lehigh Valley]] at [[Phillipsburg, New Jersey|Phillipsburg]] to [[New York Harbor]] via [[Newark, New Jersey|Newark]] and [[Jersey City, New Jersey|Jersey City]].
