===Shakespeare authorship===
Whitman was an adherent of the [[Shakespeare authorship question]], refusing to believe in the historical attribution of the works to [[William Shakespeare]] of [[Stratford-upon-Avon]]. In 1888, Whitman commented in ''November Boughs'':
