The Wood County Ravens, a semi-professional football team, was based in the city. Parkersburg was home to the [[Ohio Valley Redcoats]], a minor league baseball team, from 1993 through 1998. In 2008, the city and its three high schools placed second in [[ESPN]]'s [[List of SportsCenter segments and specials#Special|TitleTown USA]] competition.
