This large [[human sex ratio|gender imbalance]] is due to the military presence in the city, most notably Naval Station Norfolk.{{citation needed|date=December 2023}} The median income for a household in the city was $31,815, and the median income for a family was $36,891. Males had a median income of $25,848 versus $21,907 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the city was $17,372. The highest murder rate Norfolk has experienced for the 21st century was in 2005 when its rate was 24.5 per 100,000 residents.
