After his playing career ended, McGwire demonstrated coaching ability, personally assisting players such as [[Matt Holliday]], [[Bobby Crosby]] and [[Skip Schumaker]] before accepting an official role as hitting coach with an MLB team. In early November 2012, McGwire rejected a contract extension to return as Cardinals hitting coach for the 2013 season. On December 2, 2015, he was named bench coach for the [[San Diego Padres]].
