The family lived in Albuquerque, NM.<ref>{{cite web|title=Five-time champ Tapia to remain in rehab after testing positive for drugs| date=15 August 2007 |url=https://www.espn.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=2975331|publisher=Associated Press|access-date=28 May 2012}}</ref> He had many tattoos, which were prominent when he was fighting. In 2010, at age 43, Tapia learned that apparently, his father was alive. He was 45 years old.<ref>{{cite web | title=Johnny Tapia, Champion Boxer Amid Chaos, Dies at 45 | url=https://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/29/sports/johnny-tapia-champion-boxer-amid-chaos-dies-at-45.html | access-date=6 January 2020 | publisher=NYTIMES | date=May 28, 2012}}</ref> Tapia died of [[heart failure]].
