The first event was a four lap [[Junior TT]] race and a separate [[Senior TT]] race for 500 cc single-cylinder and 585 cc twin-cylinder motorcycles, over five laps of the new {{convert|37.5|mi|adj=on}} Snaefell Mountain Course. The new technical challenges of the Mountain Course forced changes on entrants and motorcycle manufacturers alike.
