Founded in 1456, the [[University of Greifswald]] is one of the [[List of oldest universities in continuous operation|oldest universities]] in both [[Germany]] and [[Europe]]. Currently, about 12,300 students study at five faculties: [[theology]], [[law]]/[[economics]], [[medicine]], [[University of Greifswald Faculty of Arts|humanities and social sciences]], and [[mathematics]]/natural sciences.

The university co-operates with many research facilities, such as:
* the [[Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik]] ([[plasma physics]]) has its second site (after [[Garching bei München|Garching]]) in Greifswald and is experimenting with a [[stellarator]], [[Wendelstein 7-X]].
