====Empire==== A trail established by Coquille people ran from the original site of Randolph to Empire. The Empire district ([[Hanis language|Coos language]]: '''Hanisich''')<ref name=Hanis>{{Cite web |title=Hanis for Beginners |publisher=[[Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians]] |year=2001 |access-date=April 6, 2014 |url=http://ctclusi.org/system/files/HanisForBeginners%20(5).pdf |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140407073150/http://ctclusi.org/system/files/HanisForBeginners%20%285%29.pdf |archive-date=April 7, 2014 }}</ref>) was founded as Empire City in 1853 by members of the Coos Bay Company from [[Jacksonville, Oregon]], and at the time it was assumed that the area would be center of the region. The company was formed after the discovery of gold in northern California and southwestern Oregon. For a time Empire City was the county seat of Coos County. The first post office in the location was called Elkhorn, which ran from 1853 until 1854. It was the first post office in what is now Coos County, though at the time it was part of [[Umpqua County, Oregon|Umpqua County]]. Empire City post office was established in 1858 and ran until 1894, when it was renamed '''Empire'''. In 1965, the city of Empire voted to consolidate with Coos Bay.<ref name="OGN"/> Today, Empire is the location of Madison Elementary School, Sunset Intermediate School and a business district along Cape Arago Highway.<ref>{{cite web |title=Assessment & Recommended Actions for the Empire District |url=http://www.coosbay.org/pdf/Empire_District_Assessment_Report.pdf |publisher=City of Coos Bay |access-date=October 17, 2012 |archive-date=April 7, 2014 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140407085018/http://coosbay.org/pdf/Empire_District_Assessment_Report.pdf |url-status=dead }}</ref><ref>{{cite web |title=American Fact Finder |url=http://factfinder.census.gov/faces/tableservices/jsf/pages/productview.xhtml?pid=ACS_10_5YR_DP03 |archive-url=https://archive.today/20200212210816/http://factfinder.census.gov/faces/tableservices/jsf/pages/productview.xhtml?pid=ACS_10_5YR_DP03 |url-status=dead |archive-date=February 12, 2020 |publisher=United States Census Bureau |access-date=October 17, 2012 }}</ref>
