In 1981, on the program director David Marsden's initiative, CFNY launched the annual U-Know Awards (U-Knows) as a way of recognizing Canadian alternative musical acts ignored by the Top-40 focused mainstream [[Juno Awards]]. Following a listener contest in 1986, the ceremony was renamed the CASBY Awards - an acronym for Canadian Artists Selected By You (originally, Chosen As Selected By You). The event, presenting awards to Canadian musicians who have won the most votes from listeners, was held every year until 1996.

The CASBY Awards were then revived in 2002 and held annually until being discontinued following the 2017 edition.
