He earned a doctorate of physics and applied mathematics from the [[University of Texas]] in 1940, and invented the communication system for the hearing impaired known as [[Cued Speech]]. He taught at [[Oklahoma Baptist University]], [[Pennsylvania State University]], and [[Harvard University]].
