** [[1983 Venezuelan general election|General elections]] are celebrated in [[Venezuela]] in which the opposition party, [[Democratic Action (Venezuela)|Democratic Action]], wins a majority in both chambers of the Venezuelan Congress and the presidency for the 1984–1989 period under [[Jaime Lusinchi]]. Voter turnout is 87.3% and Lusinchi obtains 58.4% of the votes.
