Many thousands of women and children in England (primarily in the [[Luton]] district of Bedfordshire),<ref name="eb9">{{Cite EB9|wstitle=Straw Manufactures|volume=22}}</ref> and large numbers in the United States (mostly [[Massachusetts]]), were employed in [[Straw Plaiting|plaiting straw]] for making hats.
