The population density was {{convert|5,676.6|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of San Carlos was 21,843 (71.1%) [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 215 (0.7%) [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 31 (0.1%) [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 5,407 (17.6%) [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 61 (0.2%) [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], and 2,519 (8.2%) [[Hispanic (U.S. census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]]. 2,519 (8.2%) residents identified as being from two or more races.

There were 10,955 households, out of which 9,695 (88.5%) of its residents had been living in the household for more than one year. The average number of persons per household was 2.69.
