After the PRC was established in 1949, the PLA also became a state military. The state's military system upholds the principle of the CCP's absolute leadership over the armed forces, often referred to under Mao's maxim that "[[Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun|the Party commands the gun]]." The CCP and the state jointly established the [[Central Military Commission (China)|Central Military Commission]] that carries out the task of supreme military leadership over the armed forces.<ref name="M.
