In November 1983, Peoria citizens voted to require the direct election of the mayor and in 1989, established a [[city council]] district system that separated the city into six geographical districts, each of which elects one member of the city council.  The council members are elected for four-year terms on a staggered basis. The districts are redrawn after every census. The mayor is elected at-large for a four-year term, which was an amendment to the City Charter approved by voters on March 11, 1997.
