===Awards, honours and recognition=== In 1995 he was awarded the inaugural [[Heywood Hill Literary Prize]], in the amount of Β£10,000 for his lifetime's writings. The weekend featured lectures by some of Britain's leading naval historians on "how the novels closely reflect the insights of modern scholarship". There was a concert of contemporary music and readings from his books.
