The park can be used for backcountry camping, whitewater canoeing, swimming, hunting, and fishing.<ref name="OP"/> Some of the islands included in the park are Big, Butternut, Cedar, Hazelton, and Lorne Islands, in addition to many unnamed islands. They consists of marble bedrock or low-lying alluvial sands and silts. A total of sixteen regionally significant plant species, such as little bluestem (''[[Andropogon scoparius]]''), cordgrass (''[[Spartina pectinata]]'') and Indiangrass (''[[Sorghastrum nutans]]'') have been found in the park, as well as the nationally significant lake cress (''[[Rorippa aquatica]]'').<ref name="mgmt"/>
