The [[type (biology)|type]] [[genus (biology)|genus]] (i.e. the genus after which the family is named) is ''[[Orchis]]''. The genus name comes from the [[Ancient Greek]] {{lang|grc|[[:wikt:ὄρχις|ὄρχις]]}} (''{{lang|grc|órkhis}}''), literally meaning "[[testicle]]", because of the shape of the twin tubers in some species of ''Orchis''.<ref>{{cite book |author=Joan Corominas |year=1980 |title=Breve Diccionario Etimológico de la Lengua Castellana |publisher=Ed.
